About Kerala

The state of Kerala is in the south-west region of India on the Malabar Coast. The capital of the state is Thiruvanathapuram. The Chera Dynasty was the most powerful kingdom in Kerala. There were frequent attacks from the neighboring states Cholas and Pandayas. During the Chera rule it was an international spice trading centre. It is the twelfth largest populated state in India. It is divided into 14 districts. The most widely spoken language is Malayalam and is also the official language. The religion followed by 50% of the population is Hinduism the others follow Islam and Christianity. A fact about Kerala is that the state has the highest literacy rate in the country.
The state of Kerala is basically placed between Lakshadweep Sea and the Western Ghats. Kerala has a humid equatorial tropic climate. The state can be divided into three different regions namely: the eastern highlands; rugged and cool mountainous terrain, the central midlands; rolling hills, and the western lowlands, coastal plains. The women get dressed in the traditional and ethnic ‘set mundu’ which looks very elegant. The men wear white ‘mundu’ with a kurta or shirt over a cotton ‘lungi’. In the cities men wear trousers and shirts and the women wear sari. The younger generation, follows the fashion statement and wear anything from jeans to salwar kameez.
